SHELTER VETERINARIAN

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF POSITION

This is a full-time position. The Shelter Veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to shelter animals, including spay/neuter, treatment of various medical conditions, and herd health maintenance. (S)he assists in developing, advancing, and implementing shelter medicine protocols and delivers and ensures humane medical treatment of all animals seen in the shelter.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

Coordinates and directs shelter medical operations and ensures sound veterinary medical practices.

  • With the Medical Director, leads the evaluation, establishment, and updates of shelter medical/surgical protocols.
  • Continually improves the medical management program and ensures high-quality medical care and services for shelter guests including those temporarily in foster care, focusing on identification, treatment and prevention of health problems thereby increasing adoptions and decreasing adoption returns.
  • Makes recommendations and collaborates with the Medical Director and in the formulation of shelter medical objectives, practices, plans and decisions that influence operations to ensure optimal health of sheltered animals.
  • Oversees the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA requirements.
  • Actively participates as a member of the management team; attends applicable meetings.
  • Fulfills commitments to sponsors and donors, as needed, in a manner that will support HSGM needs.
  • Supports events, fundraising, and media spots as needed.
  • Performs duties in a manner which encourages attainment of goals, contributions, and business for HSGM and its programs.

Provides leadership to HSGM personnel

  • Maintains effective communication with staff through daily contact, in scheduled meetings, informally or in writing, as needed to coordinate and direct medical functions of the shelter.
  • Supervises shelter veterinary students and externs, ensuring proper training and timely review.
  • Provides guidance to staff for situations requiring immediate medical problem solving.
  • Participates in interviewing and hiring decisions for shelter veterinary staff.
  • Oversees that appropriate shelter medical personnel are certified in euthanasia.
  • Communicates directly with the Medical Director and Animal Care Management team about care of all shelter animals.
  • Identifies and helps to resolve ethics issues.
  • Treats people and animals with respect; contributes to effective teamwork; promotes intra- and inter-departmental cooperation; and fosters public relations beneficial to HSGM.

Performs the duties of a staff veterinarian, including but not limited to

  • Evaluates and determines the disposition of incoming animals.
  • Provides medical services to all shelter animals, including physical examinations, diagnostics, medical rounds, and treatments.
  • Performs sterilization surgeries and other surgical procedures for shelter animals when necessary.
  • Ensures appropriate medication is administered by shelter veterinary staff as directed.
  • Advises, performs, or oversees euthanasia performed within the shelter.
  • Provides on-call, phone consultation services for shelter animal emergencies, to a limited extent.
  • Provides professional credibility to HSGM’s endeavor to help all domestic pets.
  • Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses.
  • Adheres to state regulations and organizational protocol regarding animal care, treatment, advocacy, and the mission of HSGM.
  • Takes immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must possess a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine Degree (DVM) and a current State of Florida Veterinarian license in good standing.
  • Commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine/surgery and maintaining the Standard of Care in the Industry.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience practicing medicine, preferably shelter medicine.
  • Experience in high volume spay/neuter surgeries is preferred but not required.

CLINIC CUSTOMER SERVICE RECEPTIONIST

Under the supervision of the Clinic Manager, the Clinic Customer Service Representative is responsible for providing outstanding customer service, guiding clients on what services we can offer, promoting wellness services and preventative medication, and taking payments for services.

The Clinic Customer Service Representative must always provide courteous, friendly, and professional assistance. The Clinic Customer Service Representative is the first point of contact between a customer and the Humane Society of Greater Miami and thus, is responsible for ensuring that this first encounter is positive for the customer.

GENERAL DUTIES

Customer Service Responsibilities:

  • Projects a professional image of the organization (dress, appearance, etc.).
  • Has a friendly, personable style with customers.
  • Anticipates customer needs before they ask.
  • Manages guest service problems with minimum assistance from management.
  • Develops creative solutions to guest service problems.
  • Serves as liaison between the customer and staff.
  • Provides service information and pricing.
  • Solicits sales and donations for new or additional services.
  • Ensures guest safety through awareness of and adherence to all emergency procedures.

VETERINARY SURGICAL TECHNICIAN

Responsible for daily care of all surgical patients, assisting doctors and other veterinary staff members with pre-, peri- and post-operative care of surgical patients. Must be able to effectively communicate care of pre and post-surgery to pet owners. This technician will also assist in the pre and post-surgery check-in procedures. The Veterinary Surgical Technician will perform duties independently with minimal supervision, operating from specific and defined directions and instructions. Maintain all medical equipment and surgical supplies, and assist with maintaining medical records. The ideal candidate should feel comfortable being able to multi-task on a daily basis, deal with very high volume and possible stressful situations.

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Prepares animals for surgery
  • Assembles surgical supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures
  • Prepares surgical instrument table
  • Maintains prep area and keeps surgical suite sterile and organized
  • Monitors anesthesia levels
  • Packages and wraps instruments in accordance with standard protocol
  • Performs related duties as required
  • Administer medications and treatments to animals as directed by the Veterinarian- antibiotics, IV Fluid Therapy, etc., and follow through diligently.
  • Observe animals for signs of distress during pre-op and post-op.

CLINIC VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

The Clinic Veterinary Technician is responsible for outstanding customer service, client education, compassionate animal care, promoting spay/neuter and preventive health care for public pets. This job requires a reliable individual, a team player, and independent thinker with good communication skills. The ideal candidate will have previously worked in a customer service position where positive “people” communication skills are important to the organization as this position works with clients who may come in to surrender their pet, have found a stray, possibly sick animal, etc. The ideal candidate should feel comfortable being able to multi-task on a daily basis, deal with very high volume and possible stressful situations.

GENERAL DUTIES

PET ADOPTION COUNSELOR

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF POSITION

The Humane Society of Greater Miami is looking for an Adoption Counselor responsible for delivering outstanding customer service in relation to pet adoptions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Is responsible for interviewing prospective parents, introducing them to the pet, and completing all adequate paperwork.
  • Other responsibilities include office operations, scheduling appointments, ordering merchandise, general clerical and operating the cash register as necessary.
  • Works directly with clients, guests, staff, and volunteers, providing courteous, friendly and professional assistance.
  • Manages the first point of contact between a customer and the Humane Society of Greater Miami and thus, is responsible for ensuring that this first encounter is positive for the customer.

KENNEL CLEANER

The Humane Society of Greater Miami is looking for someone to work hands on with cats/dogs cleaning cages/kennels where animals reside.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Animal Care

  • Cleans and maintains cages, kennels, lifestyle rooms, quarantine area or isolation unit of the shelter, in such a manner as to provide a germ-free, odorless and low stress environment for the animals. Washes food and water bowls daily.
  • Feeds and provides daily care for all animals in the shelter’s care. Cleans and grooms animals (bathing and brushing).
  • Ensures that animals are walked, and that they receive clean bedding and toys on a daily basis.
  • Reports to the appropriate supervisor any potential health or behavioral problems involving the animals in the organization’s care.

  • Makes decisions of routine medical nature within prescribed operating guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Operates under the guidelines of the Shelter Medical Staff Protocol and Procedures: A copy will be provided that you will be required to memorize and keep handy for daily reference
  • Examines patients and assigns medication according to the examination findings, under the guidance of staff veterinarian(s)
  • Accurately and timely document medical findings via relevant media
  • Efficient, accurate recording of data in current software (currently PetPoint)

  • Performing a complete urinalysis: dipstick method (specific gravity, dipstick, and sediment stain)
  • Properly collecting fecal material for fecal flotation and fecal direct smears, creating appropriate slides and accurately reading and interpreting slides
  • Properly performing an ear cleaning (both simple and deep)
  • Preparing an ear cytology slide for veterinarian to assess
  • Properly performing a SNAP Parvo, 4DX, and Feline Combo test
  • Properly performing a Symbiotics Parvo – Distemper Titer Test
  • Properly performs a skin scraping (until there is capillary bleeding, if necessary), preparation of skin scrape slide, and properly reading and interpreting the slide
  • Properly perform a Wood’s light exam
  • Properly collects samples for DTM cultures
  • Reads DTM cultures properly
  • Properly collects samples for PCR testing (Respiratory, ringworm etc)
  • Properly handles, stores and processes lab specimens (blood, urine, feces, tissue samples, etc.)
  • Orders lab tests (fills out forms, calls lab for pick-up, etc.), and ensures that as soon as results come back from the lab, that those results are taken to the clinic for the veterinarian to evaluate
  • Basic computer skills: knows how to maneuver Basic Microsoft Word
  • Comfortable with accessing emails
  • Capable of learning new software, currently PetPoint
  • Able to manage time and tasks efficiently

Medical:

  • Observes/examines animals in the shelter for signs of illness or injury, and takes immediate action while following established medical protocols and notifying the Medical. Isolate animals not in good health.
  • Provides routine and minor health care for animals housed at the shelter, under the guidance of the Medical Director/Staff Veterinarian
  • Is able to recognize, properly document and treat, if necessary, common medical conditions, including but not limited to  wounds, dewclaw problems, corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis, Demodectic and Sarcoptic mange, ear mites, ringworm, hair loss etc
  • Performs basic bandaging techniques
  • Performs heartworm tests, FeLV/FIV tests, skin scrapes and fecal checks etc
  • Routinely vaccinates and checks for internal parasites of animals housed in shelter.
  • Assists in the determination of adoptability, recommends animals for care as appropriate, and has input on the selection of animals for euthanasia. Performs the humane euthanasia (once certified) of animals, under the direction of the Medical Director

Surgical:

  • Identifies/Schedules/Prepares animals for spay/neuter or other surgery
  • Communicates with Kennel Associates regarding pre-surgical preparations for animals at the shelter

Administrative:

  • Follows the policies and protocols as set forth in the Humane Society of Greater Miami Policies Manual and the Medical Protocols Manual. If a discrepancy is noticed or it is felt that an update in needed, is expected to bring it to the attention of the Medical Director, as soon as possible
  • Ensures that daily treatments are done as prescribed, monitors the progress of the treatment and brings to the Medical or Shelter Director’s attention any condition in need of rechecking.
  • Communication regarding unfinished tasks is a must
  • Ensures that each animal’s medical record is up-to-date and complete.
  • Properly records and enters all notations in the appropriate medical records (currently PetPoint)
  • Updates medical treatment for each animal
  • Ensures and maintains appropriate inventory of all necessary supplies, drugs and equipment throughout the shelter and the Isolation area. Stocks supplies and informs Lead Veterinary Technician (or responsible party) when stock is low, before we run out

Kennels:

  • Responsible for interacting with a Kennel Supervisors/staff regarding daily, thorough cleaning of cages and equipment in the Isolation area, if a problem is noted (under the direction of the Medical Director)
  • Communicates with a Kennel Supervisor/staff regarding daily health status of shelter animals (under the direction of the Medical Director)
  • Determines ideal animal weight, manages the feeding chart and monitors adequate feeding amount by Kennel Associates (under the direction of the Medical Director)

Other:

  • Works cooperatively and professionally with all staff, including the clinic, kennel, veterinarians and customer service.
  • Assists adopters and the general public with dissemination of routine health care information.
  • Able to explain treatment/procedures to owners or potential adopters.
  • Represents the Humane Society of Greater Miami to the highest degree by providing good customer service.
  • Reports any safety hazards or unsafe usage of Humane Society of Greater Miami equipment and supplies.
  • Fills in other areas and performs other tasks/functions as needed, including helping out at the front desk with phone calls as well as occasionally working at special events (under the direction of the Medical Director)
  • Treats all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least two (2) years’ of experience working in a shelter, veterinary clinic or similar environment.
  • Must be able to perform drug calculations and data entry (currently PetPoint)
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective and humane manner, cats as well as large and possibly untrained dogs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows (Word and Excel) and the ability to learn new computer programs (currently PetPoint)
  • Must be an independent, able to multi-task and possess excellent communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to interface with customers and their families.
