Pet Loss Support
Sunday, December 09 2012, 2:00pm - 5:00pm
by Hits : 4027

We, at the Humane Society of Greater Miami understands the unique human/animal bond. Losing a pet can be devastating and it is important to honor and recognize the feelings. Grief, confusion, guilt and depression are all typical responses to the death of a loved one, including a pet.

There is no one way, a right way, or a wrong way to express grief. Let yourself mourn and experience whatever feeling comes over you. The relationship you had with your pet, how old your pet was when he passed, how long you had your pet, and your cultural beliefs may all play a part in how you react to your loss.

The Humane Society of Greater Miami offers support group meetings for anyone grieving the loss of a pet. Meetings are held at 2pm on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center. If you would like to attend these meetings or have questions, please call Rev. Jennifer Levinson at 305-856-4722 or email Lisa at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

You can honor the loss of your loved one with a Memorial Gift.  Click here to find out more information.

Rainbow Bridge (Poem)

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

When to Get a New Pet

No one can say when it is the right time to get a new pet; it won’t be fair to you or your pet if you rush into a decision that you may regret later. You will know when the time is right; don’t let anyone to tell you how much time to take to grieve – only you will know. When the time is right, visit our Soffer and Fine Adoption Center or adopt your new best friend from any rescue group or Humane Society.
