TIPS FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF GREATER MIAMI ON HOW TO KEEP YOUR PETS
SAFE ON JULY 4TH

The Fourth of July is lots of fun for people. Not so much for pets. Not only does the noise from the fireworks scare them, but it can also be dangerous. And there is no avoiding them. Almost every community has a fireworks display so the noise is endless. Here are some ways to ensure your pet’s safety and sanity during this holiday.
The best thing is to keep your pets indoors—The loud noises can be agitating so keep them safe from the noise in a quiet and escape proof area at home. You can turn on the TV or radio to help drown out the noise of the fireworks. If your pet is extremely sensitive to loud noises you might consider having someone stay indoors with him.
If you do leave them outside never use fireworks around pets. Many fireworks contain toxic substances that can be harmful to pets. Fireworks can not only be dangerous when being used, but are harmful even unused.
Keep all alcoholic beverages away from pets—alcohol can be poisonous.
Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach—neither of these products are good for pets.
Make sure your pet always wears his identification tag in case he gets scared and runs. He has a better chance of returning home if he is wearing his ID tag and /or microchip. (Visit either of the two Humane Society clinics for microchip services.) |
