Holiday Toy Drive - December 2008
Thank you to everyone who helped make this a memorable holiday season for all our 4-legged friends here at the Humane Society of Greater Miami! We are extremely thankful to all those who remembered the animals and participated in our 2008 Toy Drive for the Animals. We are happy to brighten our animals’ holidays with new toys as they wait for their forever homes. More than 300 toys were collected and monetary donations were made as well!
Marley & Me Shelter Visit - December 11, 2008
On Thursday, December 11, visitors to the Humane Society of Greater Miami’s Soffer and Fine Adoption Center had a chance to rub paws with a certified movie star. Yellow Labrador Retriever Jonah, one of 22 labs who played the role of Marley in 20th Century Fox’s upcoming film “Marley & Me,” made a special appearance to greet some of his adoring fans. In addition to posing for pictures with the famous pooch, children from Sunny Isles Beach K-8 School and Miami Country Day School participated in a Humane Education program to learn about responsible pet ownership. Members of the Miami community brought toys to contribute to the Holiday Toy Drive for the shelter animals and reveled in the glow of a genuinely well-behaved celebrity. Always the consummate professional, Jonah gladly sat and smiled on command in exchange for a tasty doggie treat.
“We were especially excited to host this event because Jonah [“Marley”] is a rescue dog himself,” explained Emily Marquez, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Greater Miami. “The “Marley & Me” story fits well with our organization’s belief that one of the greatest forms of unconditional love is found in the bond between pets and people.”

Loews Holiday Brunch for the Animals - December 7, 2008
Friends of the Humane Society of Greater Miami Adopt-A-Pet gathered on Sunday, December 7, 2008 for a sumptuous brunch at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. With beloved dogs in tow, guests enjoyed the winter sunshine in the beautiful seaside resort while rallying for a good cause. The annual event benefits the Humane Society of Greater Miami, which cares for more than 2,000 animals each year.
Honorary Chairpersons Allison Nash-Zelkowitz and Sally A. Nash, as well as Chairpersons Janet Atlas and Mary Ann Hudson, mingled with great supporters of the Humane Society of Greater Miami such as Helene Kovens, Linda McEnany, Sandy Zankl, Jo Ann Swienton, Barbara and Rick Wallace, Goeffrey and Lisa McGuire and Richard and Jennifer Postrel. The Board of Trustees was represented by Jerry and Jane Goodman and Rene Ruiz. Chairman of the Board of Directors Robert Hudson was present, as were members Sam Blum, Jeanette Fine, Rusty Atlas, Andy Juska, Rehanna Meyer and Brad Rosenblatt.. Councilwoman Phyllis S. Smith and Commissioner Sally Heyman were also in attendance. “Mr. Miami Beach,” also known as Board of Directors member Michael Aller, helped set a lively tone for the event as the official emcee.
A silent auction offered numerous luxurious prizes, from a 7-day cruise for two donated by Royal Caribbean Cruiselines to weekend getaways at Loews Miami Beach Hotel and The Alexander Hotel. Winning bidders also brought home priceless autographed sports memorabilia and great pet accessories. The event also featured merchant booths from Estee Lauder, Lucy’s Luxuries, Doral Jewelers, Jewelry by Irresistibles and the Alpha-1 Foundation, where guests could stock up on holiday gifts in between sips of mimosas and bites of fruit-filled crepes. The focal point of the event was the delicious buffet feast, an expansive spread that included an omelet station, fresh salads, custom stir-fries and a full bar. Loews Loves Pets Room Service Menu also provided special treats for hungry canine guests, who trotted happily around the festive green “grass” while their owners dined.
Generous contributions from Mr. and Mrs. Sherrill Hudson and Mrs. Kathie Schlesinger helped make this year’s brunch a great success. Special thanks go to Loew's Miami Beach Hotel, who provided both an ideal setting and impeccable service to our guests. On behalf of the entire Humane Society of Greater Miami Adopt-A-Pet organization, we’d like to thank everyone for making this an event to remember!

72nd Anniversary Celebration - November 9, 2008
On Sunday, November 9, 2008, the Humane Society of Greater Miami Adopt-A-Pet proudly opened its doors—and its expansive parking lot—to the community to celebrate its 72 years serving Miami-Dade County.
Sponsors included Royal Caribbean Cruiselines, CostCo, Regions Bank, Publix, Snap Fitness and the Florida Marlins, who offered information on their companies as well as fun giveaways. Potamkin Honda even had their new “Fit” car on display. Purina helped sponsor the event and also created a unique guessing game with an enormous “doggie bowl” filled with their signature products.
The Soffer and Fine Adoption Center site was abuzz with activity from the first minutes of the event to the last. Tent-covered stations offered grilled hot dogs to tempt guests and dogs alike. Kids enjoyed arts and crafts, facepainting, a bounce house and an inflatable basketball hoop game. Lightning the Mini Horse made a special appearance to pique the curiosity of the crowd. Our canine friends enjoyed a professional agility course and special contests such as “Best Kisser” while sponsor 101.5 Lite FM provided the music. The bake sale satisfied everyone’s sweet tooth and the rummage and book sales gave shopaholics an opportunity for charitable retail therapy. In the lobby, partygoers posed for photos with their pets in front of a tropical backdrop while others played with dogs in the Puppy Pen.
Executive Director Emily Marquez expressed her appreciation to attendees: “We are so happy to have you all here to celebrate this special day in our history; we are also thankful for the opportunity to bring together the members of our vibrant community while showcasing our beautiful adoption center! Ten cats and dogs have already found their forever homes today with visitors to this event, further strengthening the bond we have between Miami residents and our organization.”
