For many
years, animal welfare groups have cautioned against people
giving pets as gifts. Surprising a loved one with a pet is
often frowned upon because such an unexpected arrangement
rarely turns out to be a committed, lasting home for the pet,
and often ends up with the pet abandoned at a shelter. Not
to mention the awkward position the "gift" recipient
is suddenly placed in - caring for a pet they were not prepared
for. But, how can the unconditional love of a cuddly, adorable
pet be a bad idea?
The unconditional
love of a pet can be a wonderful gift, IF AND ONLY IF the
gift recipient is involved in deciding what kind of pet they
will get and when they will get it. Remember, pets can live
15 or more years - that is a lot of responsibility to commit
someone to, especially if they are not ready for it or if
you give them they wrong type of pet. Instead, tell your loved
one about your idea in advance. If they decide they would
like to adopt a pet, offer to go with them to pick out their
pet. Give them a pet adoption gift certificate or a check
or cash to cover the cost of the pet. If you are disappointed
about not having something physical to give to them on the
special day, go to your local pet supply store, buy some supplies
(food and water bowls, a book about training, a bag of food,
a book of pet names, a few toys, a brush, etc.) and wrap it
all up in a basket along with the pet gift certificate and
give it to your loved one.
Some of
the most loved and best cared for pets were received unexpectedly
as gifts. However, experience has shown that the quality of
a home a pet receives is often a result of the amount of care,
consideration and planning that took place in deciding what
pet, if any, should be adopted. Rather than surprise a loved
one with a new pet, talk to them about your thoughtful idea
first, and then you will be certain that you will be giving
them a gift they truly want.
