How to help your scared pooch through his next thunderstorm

When faced with loud noises, especially thunderstorms, many well-natured dogs will develop anxiety and fear. The reason behind thunderstorm-phobia is not known, however some veterinarians predict the increased static electricity in the air causes nervousness in dogs.

In these stressful and loud situations, dogs will act out their fear in two distinct ways: escaping and destruction. You may find that your pooch hides in small corners, under couches, or in bathrooms or other enclosed spaces. Alternately, he may work off his anxious energy by ripping up your favorite pair of shoes or chewing through your designer shirt. These behaviors are not good for your pet or you.

To help your dog make it through the next thunderstorm without incident, try some of the following tips.
- Systematic desensitization: this involves regularly reminding your dog of the storms, using a nature sounds CD, and rewarding him with treats and attention throughout. Gradually, this will show him that the storms are associated with positive things.
- Create a special storm "nook": animals love to find solace from storms in small spaces. Create a hiding spot for him or her to retreat to during the storm. Just make sure he can leave the spot on his own-an anxious and destructive dog in a confined space can have negative consequences.
- Hire a behaviorist to work with your dog if you don't have the time or patience.
- If the above ideas do not work for your pooch, there are anti-anxiety medications that can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Consult with him or her for the treatment best suited for your dog.
