Summer Can be a Bummer Sometimes - Especially for your pet
High temperatures, hot sunny days, sunburn and sweat are just a few things you might forget when it comes to your dog or cat during the summer. The truth is that hundreds of dogs and cats die every year due to irresponsible owners that fail to notice some of these things; like leaving your dog in the yard all day while the sun is cooking the ground and the poor animal doesn’t even have a bit of shade or a bowl of fresh cool water.

Heat stress poses a real danger for pets who must endure the hot weather without air conditioning or adequate fresh water.  If your pet overheats, he will pant and salivate excessively, and may eventually collapse. People often forget that a cat or dog’s coat of hair does not protect them against the harmful effects of sunlight.  Animals with white hair, light-colored skin, shaved, or those who have a temporarily exposed bare area, including the nose on some breeds, are prone to serious sunburn and skin issues.

To prevent some of these situations you should make sure that your pet is either indoors in the cool air conditioning, or that he has enough shade and fresh cool water to be comfortable outside.  You might also want to try walking your dog in the early morning and late afternoons when the sun is not too strong and it won’t cause any damage to either your dog’s skin or yours. Keep in mind that other pet health problems commonly arise in the summer, including fleas and ticks, allergies, intestinal parasites, and ear infections, among others. You can stay one step ahead by scheduling an annual summer visit to the vet for a general health exam to ensure that your pet is ready to have fun with you this summer!
